A Bodger was someone who turned chair legs out of green wood, they would traditionally build a hut in the woods, fell trees, and set up a lathe to turn the wood into chair parts. Bodgers would live in the forest until the suitable beech trees were converted to chair parts, then sell it to chair makers and move on to the next wood. I like how simple the entire process is. There is no dragging logs through the forest. You just turn the tree into parts at the very spot where the tree stood for years.
I carved some spoons from one of the maple trees that I chopped down, I used the stump of the tree as a chopping block. Carving like this makes me feel very connected to where the wood is coming from.
I knit my first sock and unfortunately it is far too small for me. Actually it didn't fit anybody who tried it on. Maybe it is like the magic glass slipper that will fit only one person. I will have to search across the kingdom to find who fits it. But that person would need to have only one foot because I don't want to knit another sock to go with it.
I did start knitting another sock. This one is not the pair to the other one. This time I am doing it toe first, that way I can try it on as I go.
I realized when trying it on, that socks are very much like hats for your feet.
The yarn is some hand spun wool that a friend spun for me. I traded it for some spoons. It is so much more interesting than the other yarn. This has small variations in thickness and little bits of lighter wool mixed in.
I recently put a small display of spoons at Local Roots, a small market in Wooster OH. It is a market coop that sells a variety of fresh foods and a great selection of craft items.
When I was there on Saturday, I noticed that two of my spoons have been taken without being paid for. I hope the shoplifter is using them. If they are inclined towards stealing they need some more beautiful things in their life.
This article is very interesting and it is so restful to hear about the things you write about like blodging and carving spoons. It is also sad that someone resorted to stealing, and I wonder if that person can even enjoy the spoons that they stole!
I like your spoon display!
